Swindell And Bowyer Double-Up At Volusia

Barberville, Fla. – For the second night in a row, sprint-car ace Sammy Swindell and modified star Clint Bowyer, Jr. swept to victory during the 40th Annual DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH on a cool evening at Volusia Speedway Park.

Swindell started fourth in the 24-car O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Sprint Car Series field and moved past Stevie Smith on the 19th circuit to capture the 30-lap feature and the $5,000 first-place prize money.


“Stevie (Smith) was having a little problem with traffic and got himself hung up,” the victor said. “His car was getting a little too loose and was upsetting him, and our car was getting better, even though I had to back-pedal a little bit as my car was tight.”

With a smile about his second consecutive win, Swindell commented, “Now, we have to go for three in a row.”

Smith held on for second ahead of early leader Cody Darrah, in one of three cars fielded by Kasey Kahne.

Dale Blaney took fourth ahead of Kraig Kinser.

Sixth through 10th were Joey Saldana, Sam Hafertepe Jr., Daryn Pittman, Jason Meyers and Danny Schatz, who advanced from the 22nd starting position.

Schatz’s teammate Steve Kinser failed to make the feature event.

On the first lap of the feature, Spud Gustin walked away from a violent flip on the front stretch. The wreck stopped the race for a brief period.

In qualifying, Paul McMahon, driving another Kahne entry, blistered the track record with a rapid lap of 12.569 seconds or 143.209 miles per hour. His speed made the
