Armstrong Prevails In Newton Midget Race

Newton, Iowa, June 24 – Caleb Armstrong emerged victorious in the 50-lap USAC Mopar National midget race at Iowa Speedway Saturday night.

The race, which was run in two 25-lap segments, was two entirely different races in one.

In the first 25-lap segment there were a number of caution periods and the red flag came out on lap 14 as the entire front straightaway had a lot of oil on it, requiring the application of a large amount of oil dry, which also had to be swept up.

The laps under the yellow counted and when the green cam back out, Bryan Clauson, who started second, continued to lead the field. He was still in front when the first 25-laps of the race were concluded.

After a short break, the second 25-laps were underway. Clauson continued to lead until lap 38 of the event when Caleb Armstrong, who had worked his way through the field from the 10th starting position, took the lead from Clauson on the banked 7/8-mile track.

Unlike, the first segment there was only one brief yellow in the segment.

Armstong went on to claim the win while polesitter Mario Clouser finished second, Bobby Santos III was third, Adam Kramer was fourth and Clauson rounded out the top five.
