Unification+Victorious Danica=Merry Month of May?

HAMMOND, IN: With open-wheel unification, plus an Indy Car victory by Danica Patrick finally accomplished, the prospects for a classic month of May at the Brickyard have never been higher.

As the Indianapolis Motor Speedway prepares to open for business on Sunday, May 4, optimism for a truly entertaining month of action is on the rise. Although many of the former Champ Car drivers and teams are relatively unfamiliar to Indy car fans, Danica’s Big Day in Japan should go a long way toward creating interest in the 2008 Indianapolis 500.

Although Speedway fans may have trouble identifying with former Champ Car pilots like Frank Montagny, Enrique Bernoldi, Franck Perera and E. J. Viso, the presence of young recent American Indy Car winners like Danica Patrick and Graham Rahal should produce considerable buzz. Also, with at least 39 quality teams on hand to compete for the 33 traditional starting positions, the long-lost art of “bumping” should once again create plenty of excitement as the Merry Month of May rolls along.

First, of course, there’s a race to be run at the beautiful Kansas Speedway this Sunday, after which the unified Indy Car teams will begin populating Gasoline Alley, and preparations for the 91st Indianapolis 500 will begin in earnest.

This should be good…
