Sides And Bowyer Score At Volusia

Barberville, Fla. – Before a large crowd at Volusia Speedway Park, Jason Sides raced to victory in the 30-lap World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series feature, closing out the sprint-car portion of the 40th annual DIRTcar Nationals by the University of Northwestern Ohio.

Starting fourth in the WTS/VRP Shocks/Dancer Logistics Maxim, Sides bolted past Steve Kinser and Craig Dollansky to lead the final seven circuits on the well-groomed 1/2-mile track.

“We kept biding our time, running around the top and trying to keep the tires under us,” the Tennessee driver said. “As long as I could keep the leaders in sight, we just kept pounding away at and it worked out us. As long as we could keep those guys in sight and with the traffic, we could get to them.”

Kinser, seeking to sweep the three nights of WoO action, ended up second with Pennsylvania’s elder statesman Freddie Rahmer third.

Another Pennsylvania ace, young Cody Darrah, powered his way to fourth place ahead of reigning WoO champion Jason Meyers.

Sam Hafertepe Jr., Danny Lasoski, fast qualifier Joey Saldana, Tim Shaffer and Stevie Smith rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Dollansky, who led 51 of 60 laps in two nights, dropped to 11th after experiencing car problems in the late going.

For the five nights of sprint-car action, Saldana ended up as the champion.

In UMP Modified action, NASCAR’s Clint Bowyer Jr. won the 20-lap feature for the third night in a row and he will be the favorite in Monday’s UMP Modified Gator Championship event. Bowyer charged to the front early and passed Kenny Wallace to gain the lead after the two put on a spirited battle.

Ty Dillon earned second place with Bowyer’s car owner Jared Landers third. Wallace held on for fourth place with Peyton Taylor fifth and Kenny Schrader sixth.
