Rosberg Takes Second Pole For Mercedes In Bahrain

SAKIR, Bahrain- In his best qualifying performance
since last season in China, Nico Rosberg kept his best time in the final
session as the Mercedes driver recorded a 1:32:330, to take pole ahead of countryman Sebatsian
Vettel for Sunday’s Grand Prix of Bahrain. Fernando Alonso will qualify third.

“For
the first time this season everything went perfectly today and that’s a great
feeling.” Said Rosberg. “Pole position feels like a kick start for me and it’s
a great achievement from everyone in the team. We still had some work to do
after the practice sessions yesterday and the team had a busy night to turn it
around. Thanks to them for the quickest car out there today”

Most of the grid made very sure that they were not
willing to sacrifice the medium rubber and decided in the first session to run
on hard tires and save the others for later. But not everyone was listening,
and Mark Webber took to the track on mediums. Even more of a daring person was
Vettel, who went out on the softer rubber to start. Neverthe less, Alonso set
the fastest time of 1:32:878, while both Marussia’s and Caterham’s along with Pastor Maldonado and Estaban
Gutierrez failed to advance to the second round.

Rosberg nearly had the second session, but Vettel
came across the line at the very last second to take the fastest time of
1:32:746, while Romain Grosjean and
Sergio Perez along with Jean -Eric Vergne failed to advance. However, Jenson Button just made it to the final
session in tenth.

But Rosberg kept his cool in the last session, just
making the pole ahead of a hard charging Vettel and giving the team their
second pole position of the season in four races.

For the rest of the starting grid, Lewis Hamilton
will start the race from fourth, while Webber will begin from fifth. Felipe
Massa and his Ferrari will start sixth, while the Force India pair of Paul Di
Resta and Adrian Sutil will start from seventh and eighth, respectively. Kimi
Raikkonen and Button will start from the fifth row.

Although Rosberg was pleased with his pole, it
certain means a different thing for him come race day.

“The race tomorrow is a different story and we’re very aware of that.” he added. “It
will be difficult, especially with the rear tires, and we know that other teams
were stronger than us on the long runs on Friday. It will be a big challenge to
stay ahead but starting from the front helps.”
