Rojas Sets Track Record At Mid-Ohio

Lexington, Ohio – Memo Rojas won the pole position for the EMCO Gears Classic Presented by Key Bank at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Friday afternoon. The race marks the seventh race of the GRAND-Am Rolex Sports Car Series season.

Rojas toured the twisting 2.258-mile road course at a record speed of 104.856 miles per hour, giving the team its third pole of the 2010 season. The TELMEX BMW Riley team owned by Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates earned its 30th all-time pole position.

Said Rojas of his accomplishment, “It was a close one. Everybody was pushing real hard. We knew we had a good car, but we didn’t expect it to be that close. I’m real happy for the team and obviously for me – it’s always good to start on the pole.”

Scott Pruett co-drives with Rojas and the pair heads the Rolex Series point standings by 18 markers over Ryan Dalziel.

Ricky Taylor was a tick of the clock slower with a speed of 104.847 mph. He drove the SunTrust Racing Ford Dallara, sharing the driving duties with Max Angelelli.

“On the last lap, I heard them (the team) saying ‘He’s got you by seven-thousandths,’ and I pushed just a little too hard and made a little mistake,” young Taylor said.

Third fastest of 13 Daytona Prototypes was the AIM Autosport Ford Riley team of Burt Frisselle and Mark Wilkins.

The GAINCSO/Bob Stallings Chevrolet Riley of Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney timed fourth fastest at 104.190 mph.

In GT qualifying, Jordan Taylor set a track record of 96.610 mph in the Racers Edge Motorsports Mazda RX-8. Todd Lamb and Jade Buford co-drive with Taylor.

Joey Hand timed second fastest in the Turner Motorsport BMW Riley and Adam Christodoulou was third fast in the SpeedSource Mazda RX-8.

Fifteen GT cars took qualification runs.

The EMCO Classic will be telecast live by SPEED at 5 p.m. Saturday.
