Quickest Gun In Texas Belongs To Truex, Jr.

Martin Truex, Jr. will start on the pole position for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Dickies 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday. Truex?s run of 193.105 mph around the 1.5 mile track gave him his first ever pole position in the NEXTEL Cup division.

On the outside of the front row will be the current points leader, Jeff Gordon. Quickest in the opening practice, Gordon?s fast lap of 28.063 was slower than Truex?s pole run by .099 seconds.

Jaun Pablo Montoya will start the race third on the grid after a qualifiying run of 192.417 mph. Missing the front row by only .001 seconds, Montoya has now qualified in the top 5 for the seventh time in his rookie season.

Chase contender, Kevin Harvick, put his Chevrolet in the fourth position.

Surprisingly second fastest in practice, A.J. Allmendinger continued his magic with a fifth place qualifying run of 192.239. His run was the fastest of the go-or-go-home drivers.

Other Chase for the NEXTEL Cup contenders were spread out through the field with Kurt Busch 6th, Denny Hamlin 7th, Jimmie Johnson 8th, Tony Stewart 15th, Kyle Busch 17th, Matt Kenseth 18th, Carl Edwards 21st, Jeff Burton 27th and Clint Bowyer 29th.

Five drivers failed to qualify in the 43 car field. David Reutimann will be racing on Sunday after running the 38th fastest qualifying lap, sending home Ward Burton, John Andretti, Michael Waltrip, Burney Lamar and Kevin LePage.
