Benson Runs Away With Toyota Tundra 200 At The Milwaukee Mile

A dominating run by Mike Skinner gave way to a dominating run by Johnny Benson. With the race in hand, a 1.5 second lead and six laps to go, Benson was looking for the checkered flag. What he saw was yellow. Mike Bliss turned Jack Sprague around in turn two and a four lap shootout would be needed to finish the race.

Benson had his work cut out for him with the “master of restarts”, Ron Hornaday behind him. When the green flew, Benson pulled away and drove off to almost a one second lead at the checkers, winning his second Milwaukee Mile Craftsman Truck Series race in a row. Hornaday crossed the line in second, followed by Todd Bodine, Mike Skinner and Rick Crawford.

After starting third, Benson took over the lead at lap 104 and led all but one lap for the rest of the race including the final fourty. His win was the first of the year and the sixth for Toyota in the 2007 campaign.

Talking about his truck Benson said, “We were good in the long run, and were able to pull away a little bit. I did not want to see that caution late in the race. Ron (Hornaday) is pretty good on short little runs but, I didn’t think I was too bad myself. So, I thought, well it’s going to be a cool race for the fans.”

Restarting with four laps to finish off the race, Benson admitted to thinking about the second place truck behind him. “Every time Ron Hornaday is behind you on the restart, you better be worried. We’ve seen him make some great moves. We’ve seen him spin people out. We’ve seen a relm of things with Ron. I just wanted to make sure he wasn’t down on the inside of me going into turn one. If he wasn’t on the inside of me, I felt confident I was fine. We were just good enough that he couldn’t do anything about it.”

After a lap three spin with Willie Allen, Ron Hornaday restarted twenty-fourth. The truck seemed no worse for wear as Hornaday made his charge to the front. “If I did [hurt the truck], I hurt it the right way because it was fast. I just had to burn it up to try to run with them guys,” explained Hornaday. ” I didn’t know what lap it was, they weren’t telling me nothing, I was just passing trucks. I just had to drive it too hard to catch them. We didn’t have a chance to save anything, we had to use everything we had.”

“It’s about time I got a good finish here,” said Bodine after his third place run. ” Ron (Hornaday) and myself were about equal, Johnny (Benson) was a little better and it showed.”

After leading a little more than the first half of the race, Skinner fell back into the top five. “We struggled here but brought our truck home in one piece and got a top-five finish. We just got off there a bit. I thought when we got down to fifth or so, we could drive back up to the front and make a show of it, but Johnny (Benson) is awfully good here.”

Skinner Wins Toyota Tundra 200 Pole

Mike Skinner drove his Bill Davis Racing Toyota to the pole at the Milwaukee Mile on Friday afternoon. Turning a lap of 29.463 seconds, he knocked fellow Toyota driver, Todd Bodine down to the second position with a late run in the qualifying session. Jack Sprague, Johnny Benson and Travis Kvapil round out the top five.
