Milwaukee “IndyFest” Next After Texas “SnoozeFest”

HAMMOND, IN: After what can only be described as a “lackluster” IndyCar show at the Texas Motor Speedway last weekend, America’s premier open wheel racing series roars into Milwaukee Friday and Saturday, hoping to re-capture some of the magic created at last month’s super-exiting Indy 500. The historic Milwaukee Mile should be just the place to do it.

In past seasons, IndyCar has staged some of the most heart-stopping, gut-wrenching races ever witnessed at the high banked Texas Motor Speedway. However, the show there last Saturday night failed to deliver the expected “wow-factor”. Apparently, tire performance, coupled with aero changes designed to eliminate potentially dangerous “pack” racing and make the cars more difficult to drive had the desired effect. Unfortunately, the end result was an event seriously lacking in close competition.

IndyCar’s new director of competition, Derrick Walker, actually offered a post-race apology to race fans for the Texas “snooze-fest”:

“They (drivers) were telling us it was going to make a difficult night and, let’s be honest, it didn’t make for good racing,” admitted Walker. “Like last year nobody thought it was going to be easy but there were different opinions on whether to change the aero configurations and if it would make a big enough difference.

“But, in the end, I decided to stick with what we had and I think based on the outcome I was wrong. I want to apologize to the fans, teams and drivers for making the wrong choice but we’ll learn from it and get it right.”

Now, for the good news. The Milwaukee Mile, being the only traditional, low-banked one mile oval remaining on the IndyCar schedule, is the perfect venue to produce an “honest” race. The guy who controls the Milwaukee IndyFest this Saturday will be the one who sets up his car best, and then proceeds to drive the wheels off it for 225 miles. That’s what has made the Milwaukee Mile the greatest Indy Car short track for more than 100 years.

It’s a tradition that you can count on. If you love IndyCar racing at it’s best, Father’s Day Weekend at the Wisconsin State Fair is the place to be!
