NTT INDYCAR SERIES rookie Linus Lundqvist drove his Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to his first ever pole in the series.
Qualifying for the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America presented by AMR started with the drivers needing rain tires on a wet track with intermittent showers making the technical track even more tricky. By the time the the field was whittled down to the top 12, a dryish line of tire tracks appeared in the grove.
The final six consisted of Lundqvist along with team Penske drivers Will Power and Josef Newgarden, Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood and Colten Herta and Lundqvist’s teammate Marcus Armstrong.
In the final session, Will Power spun his ride in turn twelve bringing out a red flag. When the session continued, time remaining allowed for a one lap run and Lunqvist laid down the quickest time with Herta just less than .14 seconds behind. Newgarden lost control in the “kink” and crashed hard into the outside SAFER barrier. The red flag flew again ending the session. Newgarden emerged from the car uninjured.
Armstrong will start third with Kirkwood, Power and Newgarden filling out the top six. Defending race winner Alex Palou will start seventh and Scott McLaughlin, Alexander Rossi and most recent series winner Scott Dixon completing the top ten.
