Garcia Takes Porsche 250 Pole At Barber Motorsports Park

Leeds, Ala. – At Barber Motorsports Park, Antonio Garcia zipped to the pole position during qualifications for Saturday’s Porsche 250, the third race of the 2011 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series season.

In gaining his first-career pole for himself and the team, the Spanish driver turned the 17-turn, 2.3-mile road course at a speed of 101.369 miles per hour, topping the 11-car Daytona Prototype field. Garcia and co-driver Paul Edwards drive the Spirit of Daytona Chevrolet Coyote Prototype.

“It is very special to get the pole for the team,” Garcia stated. “The whole car worked pretty good, and for the first time, I drove it hard. And I drove it 100 percent, and it was really, really good. After missing the pole a year ago, I wanted to have it for these guys. I think we have a strong package and if everything goes well, I think we are in a good position (to win).

Second quick was Jon Fogarty driving the GAINSCO/Bob Stalling Racing Chevrolet Riley. He clocked a lap at 100.757 mph.

“It was a good lap and I wanted to run as few as possible, to save the tires for the race,” he said. “I felt good about my first lap and when I started my second lap, I didn’t think it would be any better, so I aborted it. The good thing is that we are on the front row.”

Ricky Taylor, the 2010 fast-qualifier, timed third at 100.739 mph in the SunTrust Racing Chevrolet Dallara. Max Angelelli co-drives with Taylor.

Fourth fastest was Memo Rojas and co-driver Scott Pruett in the Chip Ganassi TELMEX BMW Riley at 100.517 mph.

Doran Racing’s Brian Frisselle and Henri Richard qualified fifth followed by the AIM Motorsport team of Mark Wilkins and Burt Frisselle.

In GT qualifications, Dane Cameron blazed to his first career pole in the Dempsey Racing Mazda RX-8 entry. His speed was 90.883 mph. James Gue co-drives with Cameron.

Robin Liddell clocked the second fastest time in the Stevenson Motorsports Camaro.

Sixteen GT cars took a timed run.

The Porsche 250 will be aired by SPEED on a delayed basis Sunday at Noon ET.
