Fogarty And Edwards Shatter Track Records At Barber

Leeds, Ala. – Even though foul weather engulfed the Barber Motorsports Park during Rolex Sports Car Series practice on Thursday and Friday, the weather changed for the better during qualifications mid-day Friday and with it, track records were shattered in the two premier classes. The Barber track is 2.3-miles in distance.

Grand-Am pole king Jon Fogarty put the GAINSCO Auto Insurance Corvette DP into the top slot with a speed of 104.878 miles per hour, hitting his stride on the last lap of the 15-minute session.

In doing so, he earned the 25th TOTAL Pole Award of his career beating out Ricky and Jordan Taylor, who took the second and third spots for Saturday’s Porsche 250, the third race of the Rolex Sports Car Series season.

“In qualifying, it is a never ho-hum effort, especially with the Taylor brothers pushing each other,” Fogarty said. “It was my first dry run all weekend, and obviously the car was quite good. Luckily, we had 15 minutes of dry qualifying, and that lap was all I had and then some. We had over-pressured the tires, and that was the key. I could only do one flyer (lap), as we had built up too much pressure.”

Alex Gurney co-drives with Fogarty.

Ricky Taylor timed second fastest at 104.623 mph. He co-drives the VISITFLORIDA/Go Pro Corvette DP with Richard Westbrook.

Younger brother Jordan Taylor put the Velocity Worldwide Corvette DP into the third fastest slot with a speed of 104.552 mph. His co-driver is rapid Max Angelelli.

Thirteen Daytona Prototypes were eligible to qualify but only 11 of them took a run.

In the GT category, Edwards topped lanky Boris Said to get the pole in the Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R. For the Porsche 250, Edwards will share the driving duties with Robin Liddell.

A dozen GT cars are on hand.

In the slower GX class, Tom Long took the pole in the Mazdaspeed/Speedsource Mazda 6 GX. His co-drive is Sylvain Tremblay.

Three GX entries were entered.

The two-hour race takes place on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. ET and will be telecast on a delayed basis by SPEED TV on Sunday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m. ET.
