Dixon’s Second Victory In A Row Closes Points Gap

LEBANON, Tenn. ? Dario Franchitti said it all to kick off the media scrum after the IndyCar Series points leader finished second in the Firestone Indy 200: “Close but no cigar.”

In winning his second race in a row, Scott Dixon made inroads on Franchitti’s points advantage (slicing the deficit from 47 to 34 with six events remaining). Immediately ahead is the inaugural event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Dixon, the pole sitter in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone, held off Franchitti and his Andretti Green Racing teammate, Danica Patrick, after a Lap 195 restart to beat Franchitti by 2.2400 seconds in the race postponed by 17 hours because of rain.

Dixon became the first repeat winner in seven races at Nashville Superspeedway, and proudly displayed the hand-painted Gibson guitar that is awarded to the winner.

Patrick equaled her career best, while reigning IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr. finished fourth and Marco Andretti fifth. Helio Castroneves started and finished sixth, while Scott Sharp advanced three positions to seventh. Dan Wheldon finished eighth, followed by Darren Manning and Vitor Meira.
