Daly Wins In Firestone Indy Lights At Long Beach

Long Beach, Calif. – Second-generation driver Connor Daly took advantage of a miscue by a teammate to win the Firestone Indy Lights Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday. The win was his first in Lights action and it came in only his third series start.

“It’s pretty unbelievable,” said Daly, who led only the final two laps of the 43-lap event. “I got here late and didn’t get to practice Friday. But the car was fantastic, as the Sam Schmidt Motorsports team does a great job in preparing the cars.

“The whole race I was learning the track. I kind of saw a few things Josef (Newgarden) was doing, and my car was really consistent through the whole race. When I got up behind him, my car started skipping, so it was a stressful situation. Eventually, I caught up to Josef but unfortunately he went off, and it was tough to see as the team was in a position to finish one-two-three.”

Daly was greeted in victory lane by his beaming father, Derek Daly, who won a Toyota Celebrity race here in 2000.

Esteban Guerrieri finished second in another Schmidt entry with Stefan Wilson taking third in an Andretti Autosport car.

James Winslow and Victor Carbone took fourth and fifth place.

Newgarden led 31 laps but ended up 13th after making contact with a tire barrier.
