Couthard And Whincup Take Sunday V8 Supercar Wins

Australia’s Jamie Whincup and New Zealander Fabian Coulthard shared the race wins today in the Austin 400 at Circuit of The Americas, bringing to a close a highly successful first V8 Supercar event on US soil.

Coulthard bounced back after finishing third in both of Saturday’s two races to take the first race this afternoon – his third victory of 2013.

Whincup won both races on Saturday but finished third behind Coulthard and teammate Craig Lowndes in the first race today before bouncing back in the final race of the day.

The four-time series champion held off a challenge from Coulthard mid-race but crossed the line to take the final 27-lap battle with Shane Van Gisbergen taking third.

“It was crazy hot out there today. I reckon I’ve lost six months of my life with how hot it was in the car. All in all I couldn’t be happier with the weekend,” Whincup said.

“We struggled early and were massively vulnerable but we were just trying to keep track position. That was the key. We managed to do that and the car came good towards the end of the race.

“We weren’t quite as fast as what we were yesterday but the track changed massively over the weekend. What was good with the car yesterday was no good today.

“It was a good learning experience and a fantastic weekend here in Austin. Everyone enjoyed it. All the autograph lines were 50/50 Australians and locals so I think it was really good.”

The strong weekend from Coulthard elevated him one spot to fourth in the series points. Whincup leads from Lowndes and Ford’s Will Davison who suffered a dent to championship hopes after failing to finish the final race after heavy contact with Scott McLaughlin.

“I knew the car wasn’t perfect yesterday but when it is like that you just have to capitalize and get the points,” Coulthard said.

“To win the first race today was pretty awesome. The car was good and it is a little bit easier at the front because you don’t have all the heat from the cars you are following.

“From what we have seen of Austin it has been fantastic and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it.”
