Coons Terre Haute Sprint Winner

Terre Haute, Ind. – Jerry Coons, Jr. won the hotly contested First Financial Tony Hulman Classic USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car race at Terre Haute’s Action Track on Thursday evening. While the evening started out slowly, it ended on a rapid note with Coons staving off repeated challenges from Levi Jones for the victory.

Driving the Hoffman Auto Body F5/Gaerte, Coons led 24 of the 30 laps but it took a late-race pass on lap 28 to make the difference. In winning, the vaunted team won for the 76th time overall.

Jones took second place with Dave Darland charging from 19th to third place. Damian Gardner and Tracy Hines were fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the feature, Jon Stanbrough and Henry Clarke flipped on the opening lap and Justin Grant tumbled over the wall on the ninth lap.

The race program had a delayed start due to unacceptable track conditions. Once the track was ready, qualifications were not held and the competition started with the heat races.
