Chevrolet Tops First Day Of Brickyard Practice

Speedway, Ind., July 26-Chevrolet teams dominated the speed charts Friday at the conclusion of the first day of practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard.

Juan Pablo Montoya placed his Target Chevrolet on top of the list, touring the 2.5 mile oval in 48.541 seconds at an average speed of 185.410 mph, nearly three tenths of a second quicker than the next competitor. Kurt Busch, who dominated last weekend at New Hampshire before falling victim to an accident, was second fastest in the #78 Furniture Row Chevrolet at 48.821 seconds and 184.327 mph. Austin Dillon placed his #33 Mycogen Seeds Chevrolet third and he was followed by his Richard Childress Racing teammate Paul Menard and Kasey Kahne as Chevrolet swept the top five fastest laps.

Joey Logano was the lone Ford driver in the top ten speeds as he slotted in sixth quickest at 49.090 seconds and 183.337 seconds. Kevin Harvick placed another Childress Chevrolet in the top ten with his lap of 49.287 seconds at 182.604 mph, good for seventh fastest overall. Martin Truex and Matt Kenseth placed their Toyotas in eighth and ninth on the speed charts respectively and Dale Earnhardt Jr. turned in a quick lap of 49.370 seconds at 182.297 mph to complete the top ten.

Kyle Busch just missed making the top ten speed cut in eleventh at 49,424 seconds (182.098 mph) while current NASCAR Sprint Cup point leader and four time Brickyard 400 winner Jimmie Johnson was 13th overall at 49.562 seconds and 181.591 seconds. Among other notables, Jeff Gordon was 21st fastest and Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart were 24th and 25th respectively. A total of 45 cars took laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the starting field of 43 set to be determined during qualification runs on Saturday.
