Spotlight Shines on Exciting Championship Battles as Pirelli World Challenge Heads to Utah Motorsports Campus, 100 Cars Entered

 

TOOELE, Utah (Aug. 9, 2016) – As 100 Pirelli World Challenge drivers head to the Utah Motorsports Campus August 11- 14, the spotlight is set to shine on heated championship battles that exist across all of the series’ eight classes. GT and GTA drivers will race Rounds 16 and 17, while GT Cup pilots are set to race in Rounds 15 and 16. SprintX Rounds 3 and 4 will run, while Rounds 14 and 15 are scheduled in GTS. For TC, TCA and TCB classes, this event is the penultimate race weekend as drivers will compete in Rounds 9 and 10. The Pirelli World Challenge Utah Motorsports Campus Grand Prix presented by Energy Solutions marks the ninth time the series will race at the 3.048-mile road course.

 

Parente Continues to Lead Long, Cooper and O’Connell Heading to Utah – GT Preview

With over 10 world–renowned manufacturers represented by some of the top drivers in the world, the GT class features some of the best sports car racing on the planet.

 

With a win in Round 14 at Mid-Ohio, Alvaro Parente stretched his lead in the GT Driver’s Championship standings – he enters the weekend with 1308 points. The McLaren factory driver looks to add to an already impressive trophy mantle that includes the 2005 British Formula 3 Championship, the 2007 World Series by Renault Championship and the 2015 International GT Open Championship – he will drive the No. 9 K–PAX Racing McLaren 650S. K–PAX Racing also brings two McLaren 650S GT3s for McLaren GT Academy Driver and 2015 GT Cup Driver’s Champion Colin Thompson, and young up–and–comer Austin Cindric. Thompson dominated in GT Cup last year winning 13 of 18 class races and will pilot the No. 13 K–PAX Racing machine. Cindric has raced in a number of series previously including Mazda’s Road to Indy’s USF2000 series and the Global Rally Cross Championship and will pilot the No. 6 K–PAX Racing McLaren 650S. Cindric scored his first career PWC pole at Mid-Ohio.

 

Porsche factory driver Patrick Long, the former PWC 2011 GT Driver’s Champion, comes into the weekend second in GT driver’s points with 1213. Long lost ground to Parente after a frustrating Mid-Ohio weekend where he finished 9th and 12th. He will pilot the No. 58 Porsche 911 GT3 R for Wright Motorsports. Long also looks to help Porsche repeat as GT Manufacturer’s Champions in 2016 – Porsche comes into the weekend only two points ahead of McLaren 104–102.

 

Four–time and defending 2015 GT Driver’s Champion Johnny O’Connell sits fourth in the Driver’s Championship heading into the weekend with 1123 points. The Cadillac Factory driver won both races at Utah last year and he will need to come close to matching that performance if he is to keep his 2016 Championship hopes alive. He will pilot the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS–V.R GT3. O’Connell’s teammate Michael Cooper, the 2015 GTS Driver’s Champion, comes into the weekend third overall with 1207 points after winning Round 15 at Mid-Ohio. Cooper will drive the Cadillac Racing No. 8 ATS–V.R GT3.

 

Nissan Motorsports and Always Evolving return with two GT–R GT3s for JD Davison and Bryan Heitkotter. Davison comes into the weekend 6th in Driver’s Championship points – he will pilot the No. 33 AE Replay XD Nissan GT Academy Nissan GT–R GT3. Heitkotter will drive the No. 05 Always Evolving/Replay XD/Nissan Nismo GT3 GT–R and comes into the weekend 8th in the championship points standings.

 

Up–and–coming sports car racer Kyle Marcelli has been in the mix all season long but comes off a challenging Mid-Ohio where he DNF’d in Round 14 scoring zero points. Marcelli currently sits 7th in the championship with 970 points and will drive the No. 2 CRP Racing Audi R8.

 

Absolute Racing enters a Bentley Continental GT3 with Adderly Fong piloting the car. Fong won the 2013 Audi R8 LMS Cup and was Vice Champion of the 2015 GT Asia series. Fong will drive the No. 88 Bentley Team Absolute Bentley Continental GT3. Fong sits 9th in the championship.

 

Sports car veteran Jon Fogarty enters his second year in PWC and will pilot the No. 99 Gainsco Auto Insurance /Bob Stallings Racing McLaren 650S. Fogarty’s impressive racing resume includes 16 career Rolex Series victories, while being the 2007 and 2009 Grand–Am Rolex Sports Car Series Co– Champion. Fogarty’s best finish of the season so far was a 3 rd in Round 2 at COTA – he comes into the weekend 10th in the championship standings.  Fogarty won at Utah in the 2009 Grand-Am event.

 

Calvert Dynamics Racing enters the No. 98 Calvert Dynamics/CurbAgajanian/Phoenix Performance/Brett King Designs/Boys Republic Porsche 911 GT3 R for Michael Lewis. Lewis has joined the Calvert Dynamics team after his previous team, EFFORT Racing, announced a hiatus from competition in 2016. Lewis won back-to-back races earlier this year at St. Petersburg.

 

RealTime Racing comes into the weekend with a new look carried over from the Mid-Ohio weekend. Seven-time series Driver’s Champion Peter Cunningham owns almost every statistical record in PWC, but he’s moved out of his seat to allow another accomplished sports car veteran to race his Acura/HPD/RealTime Racing’s Acura TLX-GT. Spencer Pumpelly will pilot the No. 34 car. Teammate Ryan Eversley has been on a charge recently winning both races at Road America and finishing second in Round 15 at Mid-Ohio. He sits 5th in the championship standings and will pilot the No. 43 Acura/HPD/Red Line Oil/RealTime Acura TLX–GT.

 

Rounding out the 15–car GT field is series veteran James Sofronas, in the No. 14 GMG/Spyder/Mobil 1/Thermal Club Porsche 911 GT3 R. Sofronas is set to make his 193st and 194th series starts this weekend.

 

Fuentes Continues to Lead Class Championship, Schein Looks to Continue to Close the Gap – GTA Class Preview

The GTA driver classification recognizes gentlemen drivers competing in GT class machinery. At season’s end, the GTA driver that accumulates the most points will be awarded the GTA Championship and the Sportsman Cup presented by B.R.M Chronographes. Along with the cup, a B.R.M championship chronograph will go to the champion. Martin Fuentes set a series record to open the season with seven straight wins, and he scored his eight win of the season in Round 11 at Lime Rock Park. He comes into Utah weekend still leading the GTA Driver’s Championship with 1454 points and will pilot the No. 07 Hublot, Under Armour Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 GT3 Italia.

 

Michael Schein, in the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R, has continued his charge to close the gap on Fuentes winning six of the last eight races. He scored back-to-back wins at Mid-Ohio and sits second overall with 1202 points. Frankie Montecalvo, the 2015 GTA Driver’s Champion sits third with 1006 points and will pilot the No. 66 DIME Racing Mercedes AMG SLS GT3. Montecalvo won the Round 13 race at Road America.

 

Rounding out the five–car GTA field is Brent Holden in the No. 14 GMG/Spyder/Mobil 1/Thermal Club GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R and Preston Calvert in the No. 77 Calvert Dynamics Porsche 911 GT3- Weekend Facts/Story Leads 18 R. Holden will make his 19th and 20th career PWC starts while Calvert makes his third career GTA start after running in GT Cup earlier this season.

 

Udell Leads Urry Heading to Utah – GT Cup Preview

GT Cup is a spec class with drivers piloting the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup – the 2016 season thus far has featured a tremendous battle between two young, up–and–coming sportscar talents. Alec Udell, piloting the No. 19 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, won back-to-back races at Mid-Ohio, and has now won the last five races in the GT Cup class. With 1515 points he sits atop the Driver’s Championship standings for the class.

 

Sloan Urry, from Salt Lake City, has won four races in 2016 in the No. 20 Security National Mortgage/Avasis TruSpeed Autosport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and is 62 points behind Udell in the battle for the class championship.

 

Corey Fergus, the 2015 TC Driver’s Champion, pilots the No. 00 Byers Porsche, US LED, Motul Motorsports Promotions machine. Fergus had an impressive 2015 campaign scoring three TC wins and 13 top 5 finishes. He sits 3rd in class driver’s championship points with 1148. Rounding out the five-car GT Cup field is Alex Welch, in the No. 08 GMG/Red Beard Racing/Morgan Adams Foundation/Torque Branding Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and McKay Snow in the No. 56 UIS Wright Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup. Welch will make his 40th and 41st series starts while Snow will make his first career PWC start.

 

Mills and Riddle/Wilson Lead Heading into Utah – SprintX Preview

The new SprintX class featuring GT/GTA and GTS teams debuted earlier this season at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. SprintX races are set to take place at 2016 Pirelli World Challenge headliner events, with Rounds 3 and 4 set for this upcoming weekend. There will be a total of six rounds throughout the season, two per weekend with the finale scheduled for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in October. Races are 60 minutes in length and feature mandatory driver and tire changes. Driver pairings are based on FIA driver criteria. For example, FIA listed Bronze drivers can drive with other bronze drivers as well as Silver, Gold and Platinum, while Silver drivers can be matched with Bronze, Silver and Gold drivers. Gold drivers can pair with Bronze and Silver drivers, while Platinum drivers can only be paired with Bronze level drivers.

 

In SprintX GT, Michael Mills and Kuno Wittmer are set to share duties on the No. 46 Mills Racing/Airtech Vacuum BMW Z4 GT3. Mills is the former 2014 PWC GTA Driver’s champion, while Wittmer was a co-driver on the team that claimed the IMSA GT-Le Mans class team championship back in 2014. Additionally, Wittmer has seven wins in 53 career PWC starts. Mills comes into the weekend leading the GT Sportsman Driver’s Championship with 208 points. David Ostella and Walt Bowlin team up on the No. 23 M1 GT Racing Audi R8 LMS Ultra. Ostella is a former Indy Lights driver and was the 2013 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada Champion, while Bowlin has 16 PWC starts. Global Motorsports Group has entered the No. 14 Spyder/ Mobil 1/ Thermal Club Porsche 911 GT3 R for sports car veterans James Sofronas and Brent Holden. Sofronas and Holden have a combined 210 PWC career starts.

 

Rounding out the five-car GT SprintX field are David Askew and James Burke of Salt Lake City, UT / Tooele, UT in the No. 63 DXDT Racing Audi R8 Ultra GT3 and Preston Calvert and Andrew Davis in the No. 73 Calvert Dynamics Phoenix Performance/Brett King Designs/Boys Republic Porsche 911 GT3 R. In the GTS SprintX category, the No. 07 Adobe Road Winery, LaSalle Solutions TRG-AMR Aston Martin Vantage GT4 will be driven by Max Riddle and Kris Wilson. Riddle and Wilson are tied for the championship lead with 220 points each. TRG-AMR also has the No. 09 BRM Chronographes/Rebounderz/Rohnert Park/Racing for Cancer/Pirata Della Strada/Simon Ward TRG-AMR Aston Martin Vantage GT4 entered for Derek DeBoer and Jason Alexandridis.

 

Performance Motorsports Group will enter two teams with Parker Chase and a to-be-announced driver piloting the No. 19 Ginetta GT4, and Harry Gottsacker and a to-be-announced driver piloting the No. 29 Ginetta GT4. Rounding out the five-car GTS SprintX field is the No. 45 X Border Foods and Wines Racers Edge Motorsports SIN R1 GT4 to be piloted by Chris Beaufait and Jade Buford. In SprintX GT Cup, Kevin Westcott and a to-be-announced driver will pilot the No. 15 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup while Alex Welch and a to-be-announced driver will pilot the No. 08 GMG/Red Beard Racing/Morgan Adams Foundation/Torque Branding Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

 

Sandberg, Aschenbach, Chase and Stacy in Class Championship Picture – GTS Class Overview

The GTS class has featured some of the best wheel–to–wheel competition seen in racing in recent years. And 2016 has been no different with six different drivers piloting machinery from five different manufacturers scoring GTS race wins thus far this season. A number of new teams have entered the series bringing new platforms to PWC including ANSA Autosport. Brett Sandberg comes into the weekend leading the GTS Driver’s Championship with 1092 points after winning his fourth race of the season in Round 12 at Road America. He will pilot the No. 13 ANSA Motorsports KTM X-Bow GT4. Teaming up with Sandberg is Dore Chaponick Jr. in the No. 12 ANSA Motorsports KTM X-Bow GT4, and Bill Ziegler who will drive the No. 9 ANSA Motorsports KTM X–Bow GT4. Sandberg’s performance thus far has helped KTM stay in the lead in GTS Manufacturer’s Points with 90, six points ahead of Chevrolet coming into the weekend (84 points).

 

Leading the charge for Chevrolet is four-time series and two-time GTS champion Lawson Aschenbach piloting the No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Z28. Since 2013, a Blackdog Chevy has claimed the GTS Championship – Aschenbach did so in 2013 and 2014, with Cooper winning in 2015. Aschenbach started off the season with a win at COTA in Round 1, and has since been victorious three more times including in Round 13 at Mid-Ohio. He comes into the weekend only 22 points behind Sandberg with 1070. He will team with series veteran Tony Gaples who will pilot the No. 11 Blackdog Speed shop Chevrolet Z28 – Gaples sits 8th in the class championship with 630 points.

 

Another team that has entered a new platform in the series is the Performance Motorsports Group. Fifteen–year–old Rookie Parker Chase pilots the team’s No. 19 Ginetta GT4 and has had an impressive season thus far – he sits third overall in the championship with 971 points. Parker’s best PWC finish of the season has been a second – a result he achieved in Round 6 at Barber and in Round 8 at CTMP. He will look to score his first PWC career series win this coming weekend. Parker will team with Harry Gottsacker, in the No. 29 Performance Motorsports Group Ginetta GT4.

 

Jack Roush Jr. in the No. 60 ROUSH Road Racing Ford Mustang Boss 302, and 16-year-old phenom Nate Stacy in the No. 14 Rehagen Racing/Stacy Racing machine team up to lead the Ford charge. Roush won back–to–back races at St. Petersburg and comes into the weekend 6th in the standings with 801 points. Stacy finished second in Round 13 at Mid-Ohio matching his previous best result of the season (second at COTA in Round 1). Like Chase, Stacy will look to score his first GTS PWC victory this weekend in Utah – with 961 points he sits fourth in the run for the class championship. Roush and Stacy as will look to help Ford win its second consecutive GTS Manufacturer’s Championship in 2016 – coming into the weekend Ford sits in third with 80 points.

 

Scott Dollahite, piloting the No. 46 SDR Motorsports Lotus Evora, comes into the weekend fifth with 856 points. Dollahite has been a model of consistency this season recording eight top 5 finishes in 13 starts. Scott Heckert will pilot the No. 54 Racers Edge Motorsports SIN Cars/Racers Edge Motorsports SIN R1 GT4. Teaming with Heckert is Jade Buford who has won three races in six starts this season in the No. 45 SIN Cars SIN R1 GT4. Heckert sits 7th in the championship standings, while Buford sits 10th . Canadian team Mantella Autosport Inc. brings a two–car effort to Utah with Anthony Mantella in the No. 8 Gulf KTM X–Bow GT4, and teammate Martin Barkey in the No. 80 MBRP Sportlab Sawmill Creative car. TRG–AMR brings an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for Max Riddle, in the No. 07 Adobe Road Winery, LaSalle Solutions machine. Riddle won Round 8 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

 

The 20-car GTS field includes Kevin Marshall, in the No. 44 VSA Motorsports Lotus GT4; Mark Klenin, in the No. 62 Schomp/Premiere Copy Klenin Performance Racing Maserati GranTurismo MC GT4; Jeff Courtney in the No. 99 RecStuff.com, Kenda JCR Motorsports Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo; Salt Lake City’s Vesko Kozarov, in the No. 23 Nissan/Nismo/Stance CA Sport Nissan 370Z NISMO; and Ron Ballard in the No. 93 AK&J Sealants RT Motorsports, LLC Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo.

 

Grahovec Looks to Build Gap Over Wittmer – Touring Car Preview

With the event in Utah representing the penultimate weekend for TC, TCA and TCB classes, there are only four races left in the season and the pressure is on for drivers to score maximum points to secure championships. Toby Grahovec, in the No. 26 Classic BMW Motorsports BMW M235iR comes into the weekend first in the TC driver’s championship with 780 points. Grahovec has two wins in 2016 – in Round 2 at COTA, and Round 4 at CTMP and has yet to finish outside of the top 5 in eight races this year. Grahovec is also helping BMW to lead in the Manufacturer’s Championship with 64 points.

 

Montreal’s Nick Wittmer will drive the No. 91 Honda Ste–Rose Racing Honda Accord. He brings an impressive resume having previously won a number of sports car racing championships including back– to–back Canadian Touring Car Championships in 2009 and 2010. Wittmer won Round 3 at CTMP and Round 5 at Lime Rock Park and sits second in the championship with 624 points.

 

Shea Holbrook will pilot the No. 67 Shea Racing Honda Accord V–6 Coupe – she sits third in class with 508 points. In 2014, Holbrook won five races in TCA and finished second overall in class. Teammate Jason Fichter in the No. 7 Shea Racing Honda Accord V–6 Coupe comes into the weekend 7th in the championship. Wittmer and Holbrook are also helping to lead Honda in the class Manufacturer’s Championship (Honda sits third overall with 55 points). Patrick Gallagher comes into the weekend 4th with 463 points and will drive the No. 54 Atlanta Motorsports Group Mazda MX–5. Weekend Facts/Story Leads 21 Anthony Geraci, in the No. 69 S.A.C. Racing/European Granite & Marble Group, Inc. Mazda MX–5 recorded his first career Pirelli World Challenge win at Lime Rock in Round 6 and sits 6th with 448 points. Gallagher and Geraci are helping Mazda to challenge BMW for the Manufacturer’s Championship – Mazda currently sits second with 58 points.

 

Doing double duty in both GTS and TC is Salt Lake City’s Vesko Kozarov, in the No. 3 Nissan/Nismo/Stance CA Sport Nissan 370Z. Kozarov could play spoiler this weekend – last year he won all three TC races at Utah. Kozarov teams with Kristian Boodoosingh who will pilot the No. 34 Nissan/Nismo/Stance CA Sport Nissan 370Z. Boodoosingh will make his first career PWC start this weekend. Also poised to potentially play spoiler this weekend is Tony Rivera, in the No. 97 Brass Monkey Racing Tiburon Motorsports Nissan 370Z. Rivera won both races at Road America and he’ll look to carry that momentum into Utah.

Goulart Leads Talented TCA Field into Utah – TCA Class Preview

Elivan Goulart, in the No. 70 S.A.C. Racing Mazda MX–5 Cup, has had a dominating 2016 season thus far winning five of eight TCA races, and he finished second in each of the other three races. He leads the TCA Driver’s Championship heading into the weekend with 865 points. Goulart’s performance is also helping Mazda lead the class Manufacturer’s Championship with 85 points. Eric Powell, in the No. 23 Tech Sport Racing Mazda MX–5 Cup, enters the weekend 2nd in the driver’s championship with 611 points with his best results coming at Lime Rock (two 2nds). Powell teams with Kevin Anderson, in the No. 22 Tech Sport Racing Mazda MX–5 Cup, who comes into the weekend 5th with 521 points and Steven Streimer in the No. 21 Tech Sport Racing Mazda MX–5 Cup. Matthew Fassnacht will pilot the No. 74 S.A.C. Racing/Equity Residence Mazda MX–5 Cup and sits 2nd tied with Powell with 611 points coming into the weekend.

 

Joey Bickers, in the No. 49 Atlanta Motorsports Group Mazda MX–5 Cup, comes into the weekend sitting 4th with 603 points after an impressive Road America where he won back to back races (Rounds 7 and 8). Two-time TCA Driver’s Champion Jason Wolfe returns to the series and will make his third start of the season in the No. 12 Kinetic Motorsports Kia Forte Koup. Wolfe won Round 2 at COTA and last year he swept the weekend at Utah winning all three races. While Wolfe will not be able to score his third consecutive TCA championship in 2016, he could dramatically alter the championship picture in the class if his performance this coming weekend is similar to what he did last year.

Groenke Leads Morse and O’Gorman Heading into Utah – TCB Class Preview

Touring Car B–Spec or TCB is the most cost-effective class category of the series and features some of the most entertaining door–to–door racing on the planet. Canadian P.J. Groenke in the No. 25 Tech Sport Racing Chevrolet Sonic enters the weekend as the most experienced competitor in class – Groenke finished 6th overall in the TCB championship last year and is set to make his 57th and 58th PWC career starts at Utah. Groenke has used his veteran savvy to take over the lead in the TCB Driver’s Championship with 694 points. While he hasn’t yet recorded a race win in the series, he has come very close in the last five races finishing either 2nd or 3rd to score valuable championship points.

 

Teaming with Groenke is Canaan O’Connell, Johnny O’Connell’s son, in the No. 24 Tech Sport Racing Chevrolet Sonic. The younger O’Connell makes his first career Pirelli World Challenge start this coming weekend in Utah. Canaan is a driving instructor at the Bob Bondurant School in Arizona.

 

Rookie Henry Morse in the No. 14 Hale Motorsports MorseGPS powered by CalAmp/MazdaSpeed/FreeM USA/Corksport Performance/Rolling Hills Prep Mazda 2 recorded his first career series win at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Round 3 and comes into the weekend only 36 points behind Groenke with 694. Tom O’Gorman, in the No. 94 TNIA, Black Armor Helmets Honda Fit, vaulted up into third in the Championship standings with back-to-back wins in Round 7 and 8 at Road America. He comes into the weekend with 569 points. Jasper Drengler, in the No. 01 Drengler Racing Chimney Mechanix Honda Fit comes into the weekend 4th in the standings with 564, while Ted Hough in the No. 68 Breathless Racing Mazda 2 scored a win earlier in the season at Circuit of the Americas and comes into the weekend 5th in the TCB Driver’s Championship with 546 points.
