Summerton?s Shanghai Surprise

The long wait for Team USA to win in A1GP series, the World Cup of Motorsport, is finally over. A dominating win from the front row by Kissimmee Quick, Jonathan Summerton, saw the 19-year old racer from Florida finish 9.72sec ahead of second place Filipe Albuquerque of Portugal.

Hurt So Good: Summerton?s success was pleasure in pain. Earlier in the start of the sprint race he was taken out by Jonny Reid of Team New Zealand. The steering wheel in Summerton?s car kicked back in the impact, and he was given an anti-inflammatory dressing to reduce bruising and swelling in his right hand. But he left no doubt who the man in charge was when the lights went out.

Summerton jumped ahead of Neel Jani at the start and the two pulled away from the rest of the pack. The Swiss driver?s early challenge melted away as the young American kept his cool.

Team Portugal then picked up the pace as Felipe Albuquerque attempted to mount a late race charge but it was high noon in Shanghai for Summerton, who becomes the 10th. different winner this season.

?We had a bad start to the weekend, but we had to figure out the problem and work from there. The team did a great job working all last night and also hard today. In the pit-stops they did a great job? summarized a jubilant Summerton.

Team and driver?s maiden win makes the USA the 16th. nation to win in A1GP.

?My hand only hurt when people started wanting to shake it after the race!? joked Summerton as he looks forward to the series finale on May 4, ?This win is definitely going to build up team morale and we are going to carry that on to Brands Hatch.?

Jonny Be Good: Jonathan Summerton has been a winner since he started karting in 2002. His 2004 Formula BMW victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway made him the youngest winner at Brickyard. In 2006 he was the only rookie to win a race in F3 Euro series at Hockenheim and had podium finishes at Norisring and Le Mans.
