INDIANAPOLIS – Four famous Americans have had their likenesses preserved forever on Mt. Rushmore and while race drivers aren’t honored in same fashion, the likeness of Indianapolis 500 winners are carved onto the famed Borg-Warner trophy. In a colorful ceremony at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, 2016 victor Alexander Rossi had his likeness unveiled earlier this week.

IMS president Doug Boles opened the ceremony and he was joined Scott Gallett of Borg-Warner. After appropriate introductory remarks, a short video was shown of sculptor Will Behrends in his North Carolina studio working on the Rossi likeness.

Next came the unveiling with Rossi the center of attention with photographers’ flash units lighting up the premises.

Speaking of the repeated attention coming his way, Rossi said, “This isn’t the first rodeo I’ve been to since winning the 500, and it is a huge honor to be here.”

Asked to comment how his life has changed since scoring the upset victory in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, he noted, “Winning the 500 has opened up many professional opportunities to me. Also, I will be racing in the Verizon IndyCar Series for the foreseeable future and it is a relief to go into the off-season preparing for one goal and one focus, and that is to win the championship.”

During the slower holiday season, he will spend time in California with his family and also pursuing his other passion – skiing and time permitting, he may even get to watch his 500 win for the first time. And I am very excited about next year since we now have continuity and a whole off-season to prepare for it.”
