Open Wheel Extravaganza at Illiana Speedway

SCHEREVILLE, IN: The United States Auto Club returned to the historic Illiana Speedway in Northern Indiana’s “Region” for the first time in several years Wednesday night to stage the “Open Wheel Extravaganza” presented by the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Utilizing both the 1/4 and 1/2 mile ovals, all three of USAC’s regional midget series were on hand with strong fields. Unfortunately, the debut of the new “Regional Sprint Car Series” was a bit of a fizzle, with only 3 cars on hand. Needless to say, the scheduled 30 lap sprint car feature was scrapped.

On the 1/4 mile oval, the 30 lap Kenyon Midget feature was won by Dillon Welch, who lead all the way. The USAC MIDWEST/INDIANA/UMARA FORD FOCUS MIDGET CAR SERIES RACE was taken by young Auston Harris after taking the lead from Kyle Hamilton on the 14th of 30 laps.

The USAC Regional Midget Series moved onto the big oval for the Grand Finale, where Brian Olson held off former midget champ and NASCAR Craftsman truck driver Bobby East for 30 intense laps. Fresh from his victory in last Saturday’s “Night Before the 500” classic, East couldn’t make a dent in Olson, who ran a faultless race.

A good crowd a chilly night and three good races on two different ovals. “Open Wheel Extravaganza”, indeed!
