HAMPTON, Ga. (January 30, 2014) – NASCAR’s overhaul to its championship format in the Sprint Cup Series will increase the importance of the annual weekend of NASCAR night racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Labor Day Weekend

“With our event being two races before the Chase begins, Labor Day Weekend becomes a critical pressure point for drivers who have not won in 2014,” Atlanta Motor Speedway President & GM Ed Clark said. “As it should be, Sprint Cup Series competition will be all about winning.  The days of being content with a good points day are gone.”

The new Chase for the Sprint Cup format is designed to place a greater emphasis on winning throughout the season, and Labor Day Weekend at Atlanta will become a must-win race for many drivers seeking to qualify for the new championship format.

When NASCAR returns to Atlanta on Labor Day Weekend, it will be a penultimate opportunity for drivers who have yet to win a race during the season to make their way into the Chase. In 2010, Tony Stewart’s win at Atlanta was his first win of the season, one that under the new Chase format would have likely propelled him into the chase.

“The pressure to win will add great intensity to what is already a premier event on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule,” said Clark. This announcement makes each competitor focus  on the most critical element of competition – winning.”

Entering the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Labor Day weekend, Jeff Gordon, Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski and Kurt Busch all entered searching for their first win of the season.

NASCAR night racing returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Labor Day Weekend. Sunday grandstand tickets start at $39 with kids 12 & under admitted free when accompanied by an adult general admission ticket on Friday and Saturday.
