Speedway, Ind., Sept. 6—After weeks of speculation amidst reports of both sides “being close” to finalizing a contract extension with driver Erik Jones, Joe Gibbs Racing officially announced the Michigan driver will drive its #20 Toyota Camry NASCAR Cup Series entry in 2020.

Jones, coming off his first win of the season last weekend at Darlington, has driven the #20 Toyota for Gibbs in the Cup Series full-time since 2018 after spending a year driving a second car for the now defunct Furniture Row Racing.

“I’m so happy to finally have my plans for 2020 confirmed and to talk about it, “Jones said in a quote released by the team, “I’m excited to be staying with Joe Gibbs Racing and the 20 team and to continue the success that we have built over the last two years in the Cup Series.”

The announcement Friday ends the speculation concerning the future of Jones at Joe Gibbs Racing as the organization works to find a place for its top prospect Christopher Bell who has driven JGR’s NASCAR Xfinity Series entry to six victories this season. With JGR’s four NASCAR Cup Series rides now full, many observers believe Bell will be behind the wheel of the Leavine Family Racing #95 Toyota next season in the Cup Series although the exact details of that scenario have yet to be worked out.
